Toyota adds
manual transmission to the landcruiser 2.8 GD-6 engine

The 2.8 GD engine, introduced to the LC70 line-up earlier this year is now available in both automatic and manual transmissions on Station Wagon and Single Cab body types.

The new manual powertrain, paired with the Land Cruiser 70 Series’ 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, now complements the existing six-speed automatic option.

Toyota introduced the four-cylinder automatic powertrain to the Land Cruiser 70 Series lineup in early 2024 as part of a significant update to the renowned four-wheel-drive workhorse. This upgrade also marked the discontinuation of the LC 76 (Station Wagon) 4.5 V8 Diesel manual transmission.

The 2.8-litre manual powertrain delivers a maximum output of 150kW between 3200-3400rpm and produces 450Nm of torque over a broad peak range of 2400-3000rpm. Designed specifically for the Land Cruiser 70 Series, the manual transmission incorporates unique gear ratios and reinforced components. Compared to the previous V8 manual model, the new gearbox leverages the higher torque of the four-cylinder engine with shorter first, second, and third gears for better starting performance, while a longer fifth gear improves fuel efficiency and reduces engine noise during highway cruising.

A new flywheel accommodating a 12-inch clutch has been introduced, providing excellent resistance to clutch slip. Additionally, a triple synchronization mechanism has been added to first gear for smoother shifting.

Manual variants also feature a dust seal on the rear end plate to protect the release bearing from foreign debris, complementing the engine durability enhancements introduced to four-cylinder models in early 2024.

Apart from the removal of the front console box to accommodate the manual gear shifter and the exclusion of downhill assist control, all manual variants maintain the same level of equipment, gross combination mass (GCM), and towing capacity as their automatic counterparts.
